Prima DONNAS Grab Your Attention

by Melissa Piazza

Forget about where music is going -- THE DONNAS will take you to a rock 'n' roll high school reunion with the class of 1976, to reminisce about where music has been. If you haven't seen or heard THE DONNAS, think back to sneaking a smoke in the bathroom at the back-to-school dance where speakers pumped THE RAMONES, THE RUNAWAYS, and KISS to a crowd of pubescent headbangers, and you'll know from where their sound and their image stem.

The four members of Palo Alto High's class of 1997 wear skintight leggings and their trademark pastel baby tees, boldly displaying their names -- Donna A., Donna R., Donna F., and Donna C. -- in true retro form. The band is all about presenting entertainment that's meant to tease both your ear and your eye.

THE DONNAS bring a feisty, garage-band attitude to the stage, and bust out high-energy, ultra-melodic punk-pop tunes with cutesy shrieking vocals that stick in your head. The crowd of predominantly male onlookers stands, for the most part, with gazes fixed upon the stage. Either they're caught up in the metal-guitar licks, or transported back to adolescent fantasies involving JOAN JETT by such lyrics as these (from the song "You Make Me Hot"): "I know what I want tonight/ and I see it coming off the street/ I'm going nowhere and I'm only 17/ I know about getting it on,/ and I want a little piece of you/ I'm thinking about taking a bite/ if you know what I mean."

Though none of THE DONNAS were alive back when their punk-pop musical style had mainstream popularity, live performances and their recent full-length on Lookout! Records show that they've done their homework. They have a firm grasp on the workings of the late-70's American teenage rock 'n' roll machine. If you get a chance to see THE DONNAS live, ch-ch-ch-check them out.
